Calculation of Link budget include Transmitters and Receiver Antenna Gains and Losses, Path loss (usually FSPL) and Miscellaneous Losses (body loss, polarization mismatch, fading margin, other). It is a very important indicator of the performance of the communication channels.

Approximately Link budget can be calculated using the formula:

The Link budget is a measure of the quality of a radio link between two points. A high-performance antenna or lower path loss (low frequencies) can be used to improve this quality of radio link channel between transmitter and receiver. Another way: increase the Transmitter output power.

Example 1 (high-performance antenna and low frequencies):

Transmitter output power: 43 dBm.

Pass loss: 70 dB (free space distance: 45 meters, frequency 1800 Mhz).

Miscellaneous losses: 27 dB.

Transmitting TX Antenna Gain: 19 dB. Receiving RX Antenna Gain: 1 dB

TX Feeder losses: 1dB. TX Feeder losses: 1 dB

Link budget (Received power) will be: -36 dBm

Example 2 (low-performance antenna and hight frequencies):

Transmitter output power: 23 dBm.

Pass loss: 94 dB (free space distance: 45 meters, frequency 27000 Mhz).

Miscellaneous losses: 35 dB.

Transmitting TX Antenna Gain: 6 dB. Receiving RX Antenna Gain: 1 dB

TX Feeder losses: 1dB. TX Feeder losses: 1 dB

Link budget (Received power) will be: -101 dBm

Link budget is important when designing an RF system because it can dramatically affect the performance of the system and used in radio communications to determine how far away you can send signals without losing them as well as how much power need to transmit your message at that distance.
